Trichy Court Delivers Life Sentence in Fatal Mobile Phone Theft Case

A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Trichy court on Tuesday for brutally beating another man to death in 2023. The violent incident was triggered by the alleged theft of a mobile phone and a small amount of cash.

Details of the Tragic Incident Under Cauvery Bridge

The fatal altercation occurred on May 28, 2023, under the Cauvery bridge in Trichy. S Vadivelu, a construction worker from Veppur in Cuddalore district, was sleeping at the location when J Sakthivel, aged 37 and from Sinthamani, allegedly stole his mobile phone and cash. Enraged by this theft, Vadivelu mobilized four other individuals to confront Sakthivel.

The group proceeded to assault Sakthivel using wooden logs, resulting in his death. Following the incident, a formal complaint was lodged, prompting the Fort station police to register a murder case against Vadivelu, S Sarathkumar (aged 30), and three additional accomplices. All accused parties were promptly arrested and placed in judicial custody as the investigation unfolded.

Investigation and Court Proceedings

The police investigation was thorough and revealed a critical detail: Sakthivel was merely passing through the area and had no prior connection to the accused. The probe concluded with the filing of a charge sheet in the additional district court on August 9, 2023.

Presiding over the case, Judge S Gopinathan delivered the verdict on Tuesday. Vadivelu was convicted under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000. In a separate ruling, Sarathkumar received a sentence of six months of rigorous imprisonment, while the three other individuals involved were acquitted due to insufficient evidence linking them directly to the fatal assault.

Police Appreciation for Successful Conviction

Trichy Police Commissioner N Kamini publicly appreciated the dedicated police team responsible for the investigation. Their diligent work was instrumental in securing the conviction, highlighting the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing violent crimes within the community. This case underscores the severe legal consequences of taking violent revenge, even in response to personal grievances like theft.
