Lokayukta Seeks Governor's Nod to Prosecute Former Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan
The Lokayukta police have formally approached Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot seeking sanction to prosecute former minister and Congress MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan in a disproportionate assets case, sources confirmed on Saturday. The case involves allegations that Khan amassed assets worth approximately Rs 25 crore beyond his known sources of income.
Documents have been submitted to the Governor's office requesting approval to file a charge-sheet before the Special Lokayukta Court. This move marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation into the financial dealings of the former minister.
Home Minister Priyank Kharge's Response
When questioned about the Lokayukta's action, Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge stated, "Whatever the procedure is, let them follow. Nobody is above the law of the land. We will see what the reasons are. I have not looked into what the Lokayukta has said. I will have a look at it and then only I will be able to comment better." His remarks underscore the government's stance on adhering to legal protocols.
Background: IMA Ponzi Scam Link
According to sources, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had searched premises linked to Zameer Ahmed Khan in August 2021 as part of the IMA Ponzi scam investigation. Subsequently, the ED transferred the matter to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for further inquiry. After the ACB was abolished in Karnataka, the case was handed over to the Lokayukta for continued investigation.
Khan had earlier been summoned by the Lokayukta police for questioning in the disproportionate assets case. The current request for prosecution sanction follows a detailed probe into his financial records and asset holdings.
Impact and Next Steps
The Governor's decision on the prosecution sanction will determine whether the Lokayukta can proceed with filing a charge-sheet in court. If granted, it would pave the way for a formal trial against Khan. The case highlights ongoing efforts by anti-corruption agencies in Karnataka to address allegations of illicit wealth accumulation by public officials.
