Dowry Harassment Case Filed in Hyderabad
The Medipally police registered a case of dowry harassment and assault against a Uppal resident and his family members on Saturday. The complaint was filed by a London-returned IT professional who alleged that she was harassed, intimidated, and attacked for additional dowry.
Details of the Case
According to police, the complainant, a resident of Rampally, returned from London in late 2024 after reconnecting with her former school classmate through social media while working abroad. The couple married in 2025 in the presence of both families. The woman alleged that her family gave 40 tolas of gold and a plot worth nearly Rs 1 crore as dowry at the time of marriage.
Within months, the complainant realized that her husband's claims about having a well-paying job and flourishing real estate and finance businesses were false. She told police that her husband had borrowed over Rs 1 crore from her friends and acquaintances without her knowledge and was under severe debt.
Allegations of Harassment
Frequent disputes broke out over the debt issue, following which her husband and in-laws began demanding additional dowry from her family. In her complaint, the woman claimed that her father-in-law threatened to “sell” her to clear debts, while her husband and in-laws accused her of having an extramarital relationship and questioned the paternity of her child during pregnancy. She also alleged that her in-laws outraged her modesty during repeated confrontations at home.
“There is already a domestic violence case pending against them based on the woman’s earlier complaint. We have now registered another case under Sections 85 (dowry harassment), 118 (assault), 79 (insult the modesty of a woman), 352 (intentional insults), and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the BNS and started an investigation,” said Ch Shankaraiah, circle inspector, Medipally.
Police Investigation
Despite the earlier domestic violence case, the accused failed to appear for counselling sessions. The complainant also alleged that she and her family members were recently threatened and assaulted by her husband and in-laws, leading to her hospitalization. Police have initiated an investigation into the latest complaint.
