China Executes French National Convicted of Drug Trafficking

China has executed a French national who was sentenced to death in 2010 for drug trafficking, as confirmed by France’s foreign ministry on Saturday. The ministry expressed its "consternation" over the execution of Chan Thao Phoumy, a 62-year-old French citizen born in Laos.

Despite efforts by French authorities to obtain a pardon on humanitarian grounds, the execution was carried out in Guangzhou, southern China. The ministry further highlighted that Phoumy’s defence team was denied access to the final court hearing, which they described as a violation of his rights.

Severe Weather Ravages Wheat Crops in Pakistan’s Punjab Region

Intense rainfall and severe hailstorms have battered southern Punjab over the past 48 hours, causing significant damage to mature wheat crops and solar energy infrastructure. The extreme weather system swept across the province, particularly affecting areas such as Multan, Muzaffargarh, Kot Adu, and Layyah.

The agricultural belt bore the brunt of the storm, with intermittent heavy rain and strong winds leading to widespread destruction. This event poses a serious threat to local food security and economic stability in the region.

Fan Clashes Disrupt German Second-Division Soccer Match

Large groups of fans stormed the pitch and threw flares during a German second-division match between Dynamo Dresden and Hertha Berlin on Saturday, leading to police intervention to restore order. Supporters of Dynamo Dresden, wearing the club’s yellow and black colours, ran across the field toward a section housing Hertha Berlin fans, some of whom also climbed over a fence and moved toward the pitch.

Flares were thrown from both sides, with some landing near spectators, and several fans appeared to exchange blows. Police later entered the field and chased dozens of Dresden supporters back toward the opposite end. It is not immediately clear whether anyone was injured or if any arrests have been made.

Artemis II Astronauts Face Toilet Malfunction on Lunar Mission

Now more than halfway to the Moon, the Artemis II astronauts are preparing for their historic lunar flyby, which will take them deeper into space than even the Apollo crews. The three Americans and one Canadian astronaut are expected to reach the Moon on Monday, where they will photograph the lunar far side as they loop around it. This mission marks the first crewed journey toward the Moon in over 53 years.

However, the crew has encountered a technical issue with the Orion capsule’s toilet, which malfunctioned shortly after Wednesday’s launch and has worked only intermittently since. Until the system is fixed, Mission Control has instructed the astronauts to use backup urine collection bags. A version of this toilet had previously been tested on the International Space Station several years ago.
