LGBTQIA+ Community Stages Major Protest in Lucknow Against Transgender Rights Bill Amendment

In a significant demonstration of civil rights activism, members of the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual) community took to the streets of Lucknow on Sunday to voice their strong opposition to the proposed Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026. The protest highlighted growing concerns over what participants describe as regressive changes to transgender rights legislation.

March Route and Protest Demands

The protest march commenced from Begum Hazrat Mahal Park, proceeding through Parivartan Chowk, and concluding at KD Singh Babu Stadium. Participants, including queer community members, students, youth, and women, raised powerful slogans such as "trans rights are human rights", "no state control over identity", and "defend the Constitution". The demonstration culminated with the submission of a formal memorandum addressed to the President of India through ACP Hazratganj, Akash Jaiswal.

Protesters articulated three primary demands:

  • Immediate withholding of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026
  • Removal of Section 18, which they argue criminalizes identity and community support mechanisms
  • Referral of the bill to the standing committee on social justice and empowerment for comprehensive review

Concerns Over Legislative Changes

Participants expressed particular alarm about provisions they believe undermine the progressive elements of the 2019 Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act. They specifically called for restoration of provisions supporting self-identification and protection from discrimination, which they claim are threatened by the proposed amendments.

Priyanka, a trans woman participant, emphasized the broader implications of the legislation: "If we do not resist today, tomorrow rights of every citizen could be taken away." Another protester, Guddan, highlighted concerns about state overreach, stating that the bill effectively places personal identity under government control.

Context and Significance

The protest occurs amid ongoing national debates about LGBTQIA+ rights and legislative protections. The 2019 Act was celebrated as a landmark achievement for transgender rights in India, and the proposed amendments have sparked controversy among activists who view them as potentially diluting hard-won protections. The Lucknow demonstration represents a growing mobilization of queer communities across India advocating for preservation of their constitutional rights.
