Lucknow Family Devastated by Rs 82 Lakh Real Estate Scam; Daughter Attempts Suicide

In a shocking case from Lucknow's Vibhuti Khand area, a woman has filed a police complaint accusing a director of a real estate firm and his wife of orchestrating a prolonged financial fraud that cheated her family of Rs 82 lakh. The incident, reported on Monday, has allegedly pushed the family into severe mental anguish, culminating in a tragic suicide attempt by their 23-year-old daughter.

Details of the Alleged Fraud and Family Trauma

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complainant, Anita Maurya, first came into contact with the accused couple—residents of Mohali in Punjab—back in 2014. Over time, the couple reportedly developed close familial ties with Anita's family, frequently visiting their home and building trust. It was during this period that the man proposed an investment opportunity in his real estate business, offering to sell a villa priced at Rs 48 lakh and a residential plot valued at Rs 36 lakh.

Trusting the accused, Anita's family sold their own plot to raise funds and transferred a total of Rs 82 lakh to the couple between June 7, 2014, and November 5, 2014. Despite the full payment being made, neither the villa nor the plot was ever handed over to the family. Anita alleged that whenever they demanded possession or proper documentation, the accused repeatedly delayed the matter, with excuses continuing until 2017.

The situation escalated when the family began protesting more forcefully. The accused couple allegedly responded with threats to eliminate the entire family, intensifying the harassment. In a desperate move, the family approached the police, after which the accused issued a cheque for Rs 38 lakh dated March 31, 2018. However, this cheque subsequently bounced, adding to the family's financial and emotional woes.

Severe Consequences: Suicide Attempt and Health Deterioration

The financial loss and continuous harassment took a devastating toll on the family's mental health. Anita claimed that the stress and trauma became unbearable, leading to a heartbreaking incident on March 13. Her 23-year-old daughter, overwhelmed by the situation, allegedly jumped from the rooftop of their house in a suicide attempt. While doctors managed to save her life, she suffered a fractured spine, leaving her with serious injuries.

Further compounding the family's distress, Anita reported that her husband's health has severely deteriorated in 2025, and he is currently seriously ill. The cumulative impact of the fraud, threats, and resulting trauma has left the family in a state of profound emotional and physical crisis.

Police Response and Legal Action

Inspector Amar Singh confirmed that an FIR has been registered against the accused director and his wife based on the complaint. He stated, "The complainant was called with all relevant documents and evidence. Further legal action will be taken after examining statements and material on record." The police are now investigating the case to verify the allegations and pursue appropriate legal measures against the accused.

This case highlights the severe repercussions of financial fraud, extending beyond monetary loss to profound personal tragedy. Authorities are urging victims of similar scams to come forward and report such incidents promptly to prevent further harm.
