A 28-year-old woman was found hanging at her in-laws' residence in Lucknow's Indira Nagar area on Tuesday. The victim's family has alleged that she was murdered over dowry demands and have filed a police complaint against her husband and in-laws.
Incident Details
The deceased, identified as Priya Singh, was married to Ankit Singh three years ago. According to the victim's brother, the couple had frequent disputes over dowry. On Tuesday morning, Priya's mother-in-law informed the family that she had committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan. However, the victim's family claims that she was killed and then the scene was staged to look like a suicide.
Police Investigation
Police have registered a case under sections 304B (dowry death) and 498A (husband or relative of husband subjecting a woman to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) said, "The victim's family has alleged dowry harassment and murder. We are investigating the matter from all angles. No arrests have been made yet."
The incident has sparked outrage in the neighborhood, with locals demanding strict action against the accused. This is the second such case reported in Lucknow in the past month, highlighting the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in the state.
