In a shocking crime that has rattled the Nishatganj area of Lucknow, a 36-year-old woman allegedly conspired with her younger lover to murder her 69-year-old mother-in-law inside their family home. The accused, Ranjana Verma, along with her 21-year-old lover Rajan Sharma—who worked as a taxi driver and mechanic while living as a tenant in the same house—have been taken into custody. According to police investigations, the duo meticulously planned the murder, which they executed on Saturday afternoon.
Investigators revealed that Ranjana and Rajan tied the victim Nirmala Devi's hands and legs before strangling her to death. In a calculated move to avoid detection, they deliberately switched off the house's CCTV surveillance system between 2 pm and 4 pm, creating a crucial window for their criminal activity.
Discovery and Attempted Cover-Up
The crime began to unravel when the victim's 18-year-old grandson, Aditya, returned home around 4 pm. He discovered his grandmother lying unconscious with her limbs tied and immediately raised an alarm. Aditya informed his father, Tridesh Verma, and attempted to contact his mother, Ranjana.
Fearing suspicion, Ranjana and Rajan returned to the residence and attempted to stage the scene as a robbery and murder case. Ranjana was observed pretending to grieve while claiming that they had been away from home when the tragic incident occurred.

Footage from external cameras captured Ranjana leaving the house with Rajan, providing important visual evidence. "Rajan confessed to the crime, revealing that he had been in a relationship with Ranjana for four years," stated Ankit Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mahanagar. "He informed police that the victim strongly opposed their relationship, which prompted the duo to plan her murder. Rajan also admitted to having control over the CCTV system, which he switched off before executing their plan."
