In a striking example of how global energy pressures are fueling local crime, a thief in Ludhiana executed a swift and opportunistic robbery at a roadside eatery, making off with cash, a mobile phone, and—most notably—a full LPG cylinder. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening in the Daresi area, highlights the growing desperation for fuel assets as international supply chain tensions create a "pressure cooker" environment for gas prices.
The Heist: A Minutes-Long Operation
The theft unfolded around 8:30 PM at a dhaba located near the old vegetable market. According to owner Saurabh Kumar, he had briefly stepped out for errands, leaving the front shutter partially lowered. Meanwhile, workers were occupied cleaning utensils at the rear of the premises in preparation for the dinner rush. This brief window of distraction provided the perfect opportunity for the suspect.
CCTV footage captured the entire sequence: the individual entered the unmanned front counter, ransacked the cash drawer to steal ₹12,000, took a mobile phone, and then lugged away the heavy LPG cylinder. "I returned minutes later to find the cash and phone gone," Saurabh recounted. "It was only after questioning my staff that we realized the cylinder was also missing."

While petty theft is not uncommon in urban areas, the theft of an LPG cylinder carries heightened significance due to the current global energy landscape. The ongoing situation in the Strait of Hormuz—a critical chokepoint for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shipments worldwide—has placed immense pressure on local prices and availability. This has effectively transformed domestic and commercial fuel tanks into high-value targets for opportunistic criminals.
Police authorities are now sounding the alarm, warning business owners to secure their fuel assets as these global supply tensions continue to ripple through the local economy. Police Investigation Underway
The Division Number 4 police station has registered a formal complaint based on Saurabh Kumar's report. Sub-Inspector Gurjit Singh, the Station House Officer, confirmed that the complainant provided clear CCTV footage in which the suspect's face is visible. "We are currently working to trace the man's identity and location," Singh stated. As of late Wednesday night, no arrests had been made, but the investigation is actively progressing with the digital evidence in hand.
