Ludhiana Hit-and-Run Incidents Claim Two Lives, One Driver Arrested, Another Hunted
A devastating weekend of road trauma has left families in Ludhiana shattered after two separate hit-and-run and speeding incidents claimed the lives of a 56-year-old grandmother and a young man. The city police have taken swift action, arresting one driver involved in a high-impact collision on Pakhowal Road, while a manhunt remains active for a truck driver who fled the scene after crushing a pedestrian in Lalton Kalan.
Tragedy on Pakhowal Road: Grandmother Killed in Front of Son
The first fatality occurred on the busy Pakhowal Road, where Nirmala Devi, 56, was attempting to cross the street to board a three-wheeler. Her son, Rahul Kumar, who was escorting her to visit a relative, witnessed the horrific tragedy unfold. According to Kumar, the impact of the collision was so severe that his mother died instantly at the spot, leaving no chance for medical intervention.
Police investigations allege that a speeding Maruti Suzuki Swift, driven by Gulzar Singh of Lohara, struck the victim with tremendous force. Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Dilbag Singh confirmed that an FIR (first-information report) has been registered under sections 281 and 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The driver was apprehended shortly after the incident, but the emotional scars for the family are likely to last a lifetime.
Separate Incident in Lalton Kalan: Truck Driver Flees After Fatal Crash
In a separate and equally tragic incident in Village Lalton Kalan, a young man identified as Harjeet Singh lost his life while standing outside a local cement store. His father, Harpal Singh, reported that a recklessly driven truck mowed down his son before the driver sped away from the scene. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Harjeet Singh succumbed to his injuries during emergency treatment, adding to the weekend's death toll.
Sadar police have identified the driver as Ishwar Singh and are actively pursuing him. Head constable Harwinder Singh stated that the driver managed to escape immediately after the accident. Authorities have registered an FIR under BNS sections 324 (4), 106, and 281, and have launched a coordinated search operation to track down the fugitive, emphasizing the urgency of bringing him to justice.
Police Response and Legal Actions
The Ludhiana police have demonstrated a proactive approach in handling these cases, with one arrest made and another investigation underway. The use of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections highlights the legal framework being applied to address such road safety violations. These incidents underscore the critical need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and heightened public awareness about reckless driving.
As the community mourns the loss of two lives, questions arise about road safety measures in the city. The emotional testimonies from family members, coupled with the police's ongoing efforts, paint a grim picture of the consequences of speeding and hit-and-run behaviors. The search for the truck driver continues, with hopes that his capture will provide some closure to the grieving families.
