Mysterious Death of Undertrial in Ludhiana Jail Sparks Custodial Torture Allegations
A 31-year-old undertrial prisoner lodged in Ludhiana Central Jail on Tajpur Road has died under mysterious circumstances, triggering serious allegations of custodial torture from his family members. The incident has prompted a judicial enquiry to investigate the conflicting narratives surrounding the death.
Family Alleges Systematic Torture Following Escape Attempt
The deceased, identified as Jatinder, a resident of Basti Jodhewal, had been incarcerated for approximately six months in connection with a rape case. According to family members, Jatinder's death resulted from brutal torture by jail officials following an attempted escape from custody.
Harpreet Kaur, Jatinder's wife, recounted receiving a distressing call from jail authorities in the early hours of April 13. "Jail authorities informed me that Jatinder was unwell and had been taken to a hospital. When I reached the jail, I was told that he had died and that he was brought dead," she stated.
The family alleges that approximately two weeks before his death, Jatinder was taken to Ludhiana Civil Hospital for medical treatment, where he briefly managed to escape custody. Jail officials reportedly apprehended him after a chase, after which the family claims he was subjected to severe torture and denied proper food and medical care.
Injury Marks and Prior Threats Raise Suspicion
Harpreet Kaur provided disturbing details about her husband's condition, stating, "I am sure he was tortured in custody, which led to his death. I have pictures of his body showing multiple injury marks. After he tried to escape, jail staff tortured him and did not give him food or medicine. My husband had no medical issues."
She further revealed that Jatinder had previously informed her about a dangerous incident inside the jail where a group of inmates attempted to strangle him, causing significant damage to his vocal cords. The family believes he was deliberately targeted within the prison system.
Rekha, Jatinder's sister, raised additional concerns about the circumstances surrounding his case. She alleged that the rape charge against her brother was fabricated and claimed that the complainant's side had demanded Rs 10 lakh from the family for a compromise settlement. "We suspect that the same people got Jatinder killed in jail," she asserted.
Jail Authorities Present Alternative Narrative
Jail authorities have categorically denied all allegations of foul play, maintaining that Jatinder's death resulted from natural medical complications. Deputy Superintendent of Ludhiana Central Jail, Balbeer Singh, provided a detailed account contradicting the family's version of events.
According to Singh, Jatinder staged a false suicide attempt approximately two weeks before his death. "He pretended to hang himself and claimed that he lost his voice in the attempt. He was taken to the Civil Hospital and given medicines. In the hospital, he suddenly started speaking, which made it clear that he was putting on a drama," Singh explained.
The official further stated that when police and jail staff were transporting Jatinder back from the hospital, he attempted to flee. "The staff chased him and apprehended him. On probing, it was found that he had deliberately staged the suicide attempt to be taken to the hospital so that he could escape from there," Singh added.
Medical Emergency and Official Response
Following the escape attempt, jail authorities placed Jatinder under strict observation alongside four other inmates described as notorious. Singh reported that on April 13, around 4:30 AM, jail staff informed him that Jatinder had become unwell and suffered severe fits.
"He was given first aid at the jail hospital and was referred to the Civil Hospital, but he died on the way," the deputy superintendent stated. He emphasized that no foul play was involved in the death and confirmed that a postmortem examination was conducted on Tuesday, with the body subsequently handed over to the family.
Pattern of Custodial Concerns in Ludhiana
This incident occurs against a backdrop of ongoing concerns about custodial treatment in Ludhiana:
- 2020 Custodial Death Case Revived: A Ludhiana court recently ordered murder charges against four police personnel in the death of Deepak Shukla, a recovery agent who allegedly suffered brutal torture in illegal custody and died in jail in February 2020. The autopsy confirmed severe internal injuries.
- Gangster Death Sparks Protests (2025): Notorious gangster Sagar Neutron died while in custody at PGI Chandigarh. While officials cited health complications including diabetes, his family alleged foul play and custodial killing, leading to significant protests in Ludhiana.
- Jail Inmate's Death Ruled Suicide (2023): A judicial inquiry into another Ludhiana Central Jail death concluded that the inmate had consumed poison, officially ruling it a suicide, though the case initially raised suspicions of custodial negligence.
- Recent Custodial Torture Allegations (2026): In a separate recent case, a Ludhiana Station House Officer was removed from duty after a businessman alleged he was beaten and given electric shocks while in custody, highlighting persistent concerns about custodial abuse in the city.
The judicial enquiry currently underway will seek to establish the truth between the conflicting accounts of Jatinder's death, while broader questions about custodial safety and accountability continue to resonate throughout Ludhiana's correctional system.
