Ludhiana Police Apprehend ATM Card Swapper in Jagraon Area
The Ludhiana rural police have successfully arrested a man accused of orchestrating a sophisticated ATM card swapping scam that targeted unsuspecting individuals at local kiosks. According to police officials, the accused, identified as Sanjeev Kumar alias Sanjay, a resident of Dream City on Noorwala Road in Jagraon, allegedly duped victims by pretending to assist them with cash withdrawals before secretly exchanging their genuine ATM cards with fake ones.
Modus Operandi of the ATM Fraud Scheme
Investigating officer, ASI Shaminderjit Singh of the Jagraon City police station, detailed the accused's method of operation. Sanjeev Kumar would strategically position himself outside ATM booths, carefully observing customers who appeared to struggle with the withdrawal process. He would then approach these individuals under the guise of offering help, asking for their ATM passwords to supposedly facilitate the transaction.
During this deceptive assistance, he would allegedly swap the victim's legitimate ATM card with one of the numerous bank cards he carried in his pocket. To complete the ruse, he would falsely claim that the victim's card was malfunctioning, retain the original card, and later use it to withdraw substantial amounts of money from their bank accounts.
Police Investigation and Arrest Details
The breakthrough in the case came when police received a crucial tip-off while patrolling near Malak Chowk in Jagraon. The informant revealed that Sanjeev Kumar was actively cheating people using this fraudulent technique. Acting on this information, authorities launched an immediate manhunt and apprehended the accused on Sunday as he traveled toward Jagraon on a Pulsar motorcycle, allegedly intending to target more victims.
During the arrest, police made significant recoveries that substantiated the allegations. A total of 20 ATM cards from various banks were seized from Sanjeev Kumar's possession, along with Rs 5,200 in cash. ASI Shaminderjit Singh confirmed that an extensive investigation is currently underway to uncover the full extent of his fraudulent activities, identify additional victims, and determine details of previous scams he may have committed.
Historical Context of Similar ATM Fraud Cases in Ludhiana Region
This incident is not an isolated occurrence in the Ludhiana area. Police records reveal a pattern of similar ATM card swapping schemes that have targeted residents in recent years:
- In January 2025, Khanna police dismantled an inter-state gang involved in ATM card swapping, recovering 56 debit cards from accused individuals who specifically targeted elderly people at kiosks.
- During 2024, Samrala police arrested a man for swapping a woman's debit card at an ATM booth under the pretense of assistance, subsequently withdrawing over Rs 1 lakh from her account.
- In 2023, residents in the Moti Nagar area of Ludhiana caught a suspect engaged in exchanging ATM cards of customers at kiosks, leading to police recovery of 35 debit cards.
The arrest of Sanjeev Kumar highlights ongoing concerns about ATM security and the vulnerability of individuals, particularly those unfamiliar with digital banking procedures. Police have urged citizens to exercise extreme caution when using ATM facilities and to avoid sharing passwords or accepting unsolicited help from strangers at kiosks.
