In a disturbing incident highlighting street crime, the Ludhiana police have taken action after a video capturing an attempted robbery on two women went viral on social media platforms. The Division Number 3 police station has registered a formal case against unidentified accused involved in the brazen daylight snatching attempt.
Viral Video Triggers Police Action
The case came to light not through a direct victim complaint, but via widespread circulation of a CCTV footage clip on the internet. The police registered the First Information Report (FIR) on the official statement of ASI Gurmel Singh, as the targeted women had not approached the authorities themselves. This proactive step underscores the increasing role of digital evidence in modern law enforcement.
The FIR invokes several sections of the Indian Penal Code to cover the severity of the act. The accused have been booked under IPC sections 304 (snatching), 62 (attempt to commit an offence), and 3(5) (criminal act by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
Chilling Details of the Kidwai Nagar Incident
The attempted robbery occurred on December 14 in the Kidwai Nagar area of Ludhiana. The CCTV footage, which has since sparked public outrage, reveals a harrowing sequence of events.
Two women were riding a scooter when two men on a motorcycle approached them from behind. The miscreants forcibly stopped the scooter by blocking its path with their motorcycle. The video clearly shows the duo aggressively trying to seize the women's purses and other personal belongings. Displaying remarkable courage, the women fought back against their assailants.
The situation escalated dangerously when one of the robbers dismounted, pulled out a sharp weapon, and threatened the women. Their screams for help raised an alarm, prompting people in the vicinity to start gathering. Sensing the crowd, the two men abandoned their attempt and fled the scene on their motorcycle.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Safety Concerns
Speaking on the case, police officials confirmed that the investigation was initiated solely on the basis of the viral video evidence. "While the women had not approached the police with a complaint, we registered a case on the basis of the viral video. We are now making efforts to trace the accused," stated ASI Gurmel Singh.
This incident has once again brought the issue of women's safety and street crime in urban areas to the forefront. The police's decision to file an FIR without a formal complainant is being seen as a necessary move to ensure such crimes do not go unpunished. Investigators are now scanning the CCTV footage and other digital trails to identify and apprehend the motorcycle-borne accused.
The case serves as a critical reminder for citizens to report crimes promptly and for authorities to utilize all available tools, including social media and public surveillance footage, to maintain law and order.
