Ludhiana Traffic Blockade Over Police Failure to Capture Fugitive Rapist
Demonstrators brought traffic to a standstill at one of Ludhiana's busiest transport hubs on Sunday, protesting what they described as police inaction in capturing a convicted rapist who allegedly murdered a 9-year-old boy after escaping custody two months earlier.
Jalandhar Bypass Blockade Highlights Public Fury
The blockade at the critical Jalandhar Bypass artery, used by thousands of daily commuters and long-distance buses, underscored mounting public anger over perceived disparities in how law enforcement handles cases involving marginalized communities versus influential individuals.
For over an hour, relatives of the deceased child and local residents completely blocked traffic flow, forcing hundreds of passengers to abandon their buses and continue their journeys on foot through the congested area.
Protesters Accuse Police of Inaction and Bias
Protesters raised loud slogans against the Ludhiana police department, alleging that two months of official assurances had produced zero tangible progress in the manhunt for the accused, Ajay Kumar.
"Had this victim been the child of someone influential, police would have made an arrest within days," one protester declared angrily. "But when poor families suffer, their voices are systematically ignored by those in power."
The demonstration highlighted deep-seated frustrations about unequal justice delivery in the region, with many participants expressing skepticism about police commitment to solving crimes affecting disadvantaged communities.
Police Negotiations and Fresh Promises
Senior police officers and personnel from the Salem Tabri station eventually arrived at the scene to negotiate with the agitated crowd. The blockade was lifted only after officials provided renewed guarantees that the fugitive would be apprehended "as early as possible."
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Sameer Verma stated that specialized police teams have conducted extensive raids across Punjab and at the suspect's native residence in Uttar Pradesh. However, police sources privately admitted the investigative trail has grown increasingly cold over the past weeks.
Challenges in Tracking the Fugitive
Tracking Kumar has proven exceptionally difficult according to law enforcement officials, primarily because the fugitive has deliberately avoided using mobile phones or contacting known associates since his escape. This calculated evasion has significantly hampered investigative efforts despite multiple police teams working on the case.
Timeline of the Tragic Events
- February 2: Ajay Kumar — already convicted of raping a minor — escaped police custody while being transported from Ludhiana Borstal Jail to a civil hospital for a routine medical examination.
- February 5: A 9-year-old boy from Kumar's village was reported missing to authorities.
- February 5 (allegedly): Prosecutors believe Kumar abducted and killed the child on this same day, subsequently dumping the body in nearby bushes.
- February 7: Following intense protests by the family outside the police station, the child's body was discovered with his throat slit.
Reward Announced for Information
In an effort to expedite the capture of the fugitive, Salem Tabri police have announced a ₹20,000 reward for any credible information leading to the arrest of Ajay Kumar. This financial incentive represents one of several measures authorities claim to be implementing to resolve the high-profile case that has gripped the Ludhiana community.
The protest and subsequent police response have reignited debates about police accountability, resource allocation for investigations involving vulnerable populations, and the effectiveness of manhunt operations for dangerous fugitives in Punjab's urban centers.
