Chief Justice Applauds Over 4,000 Women Lawyers in Madras High Court for Enhancing Social Diversity
In a significant farewell address, Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava of the Madras High Court emphasized that the presence of more than 4,000 practising women lawyers within the court reflects a profound social diversity. This statement was made on Thursday, marking his superannuation from the esteemed position.
The Chief Justice underscored the remarkable contributions of these women lawyers across various legal domains, including constitutional, civil, criminal, commercial, and service law jurisdictions. He praised their diligence, clarity, and unwavering commitment, noting that their involvement signifies substantial progress and transformation in the legal profession.
Encouraging Women in Law and Addressing Judicial Challenges
During his speech, Chief Justice Shrivastava extended appreciation to women lawyers associations in Chennai and Madurai for their pivotal role in encouraging more women to enter and excel in the legal field. He offered sage advice to young legal professionals, describing the profession as "no sprint, but a marathon, where hard work is the mother of success."
Turning to systemic issues, he highlighted that challenges within the judicial system can only be overcome through collective resolve. Essential steps include filling judicial vacancies, enhancing infrastructure, embracing technology, and promoting alternative dispute redressal mechanisms. He acknowledged that digital systems such as e-filing and virtual hearings have improved accessibility, but stressed the importance of ensuring technology remains inclusive and accessible to all segments of society.
Tributes from Legal Community and Landmark Case Resolution
Earlier in the proceedings, Advocate-General P S Raman delivered a farewell address, lauding Chief Justice Shrivastava for his adept handling of public interest litigations. Raman commended him for "choosing merit cases and dismissing others with costs, thereby ensuring that only individuals with just cause invoke the jurisdiction."
He also highlighted a notable achievement: the Chief Justice successfully settled a three-decade-old land dispute case, restoring ownership to the original claimants. This resolution underscores his dedication to justice and efficient case management during his tenure.
The event served as a testament to the evolving landscape of the legal profession in Tamil Nadu, with women lawyers playing an increasingly vital role in shaping its future.
