The Madras High Court on Thursday disposed of a petition filed by Chennai Harbour TVK candidate Sinora Ashok, who alleged a death threat involving DMK minister P K Sekar Babu. The court closed the case after the city police stated that adequate security had already been provided to Ashok.
Court Proceedings
Recording the submissions of the police, Justice M Nirmal Kumar closed the petition moved by Ashok. The petitioner had claimed that on April 23, the polling day for the Tamil Nadu assembly election, Sekar Babu, along with his associates, attacked him. He further expressed apprehension that a similar attack might occur on the day of vote counting.
Allegations of Threat
Ashok stated that there is a threat to his life and alleged that, out of fear of defeat, plans are being made to attack him on counting day by the DMK minister. Although a complaint was lodged with the Chennai police commissioner, only a single policeman was provided for his security, he said.
Petitioner's Demand
The candidate sought a court directive to the city police to provide permanent armed security at his residence. However, the prosecution submitted that adequate security was already provided to the petitioner.
Disposal of Plea
After hearing both sides, the court disposed of the plea, noting the police's assurance of sufficient security measures. The case highlights the heightened tensions during the election period in Tamil Nadu.
