Madurai Advocates Protest Against Judicial Magistrate Lakshmi Priya

Hundreds of advocates took out a procession in Madurai on Friday as part of their protest demanding the removal of Judicial Magistrate (JM) V of Madurai, Lakshmi Priya. The magistrate had initiated action against some advocates for disrupting court proceedings in January.

Protest Details

The advocates, who are members of the Joint Advocates Association Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and the Madurai Bar Association, marched from the district court complex in K K Nagar to the Madurai bench of the Madras high court campus. They condemned the JM for initiating action against certain advocates.

During the procession, the protesters held placards and raised slogans against the judge. They also held a protest in front of the Madurai bench campus. Police diverted traffic on the stretch in view of the procession.

Background of the Case

It may be recalled that advocates practising before the Madurai district court had filed a batch of petitions before the high court seeking to quash the proceedings initiated by JM V for disrupting court proceedings. Dismissing the petitions, Justice L Victoria Gowri appreciated the JM for her fearlessness, integrity, and unwavering commitment to judicial duty.
