Madurai Protests Erupt Against Transgender Act Amendment Over Medical Certification
Members of various organizations staged a significant protest in Madurai on Monday, voicing strong opposition to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act Amendment of 2026. The demonstration highlighted deep concerns about the new medicalized certification process introduced by the amendment.

Protesters from the Transgender Resource Centre, Mani Memorial Foundation, Aniyam Foundation, DYFI, and SFI raised multiple critical issues. The amendment replaces the previous right to self-identification with mandatory evaluations conducted by doctors and magistrates. Advocates argue that requiring individuals to prove their identity through hormone tests or physical examinations imposes a "huge mental burden" and could "ruin someone's life" if bureaucratic errors occur.
The group also pointed out that the amendment lacks clear protections for pre-operative individuals and fails to address the specific needs of "thirunambigal" (transgender men). Furthermore, they questioned the disparity in legal penalties, noting that the maximum punishment for sexual abuse against a transgender person is only two years, whereas similar crimes against women can carry life imprisonment.
Terminology and Legislative Process Concerns
Priya Babu, managing director of the Transgender Resource Centre, emphasized that the proposed changes ignore decades of progress in regional terminology and self-identification. The group strongly condemned the reintroduction of the term "aravani", stating that for over 15 years, the community in Tamil Nadu has transitioned to using the terms "thirunangai" and "Thirunambi". "We strongly oppose bringing back ‘aravani' under the guise of cultural identity," Priya stated.
She also highlighted that the transgender community was excluded from the legislative process, with even members of the National Transgender Council not being consulted before the amendment was drafted. Additionally, Priya called for penalties against parents who harass or evict transgender children, criticizing the current framework for failing to hold families accountable for such abuse.
