The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has alleged that a self-styled godman from Maharashtra, identified as Kharat, depicted himself as an incarnation of Lord Shiva and operated an extortion racket. The agency made the revelations during a court hearing, stating that Kharat amassed significant wealth through illegal means.
Modus Operandi
According to the ED, Kharat used his spiritual persona to intimidate and extort money from his followers and others. He claimed to possess divine powers and threatened those who did not comply with his demands. The agency has been investigating the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Evidence Collected
The ED has gathered substantial evidence, including financial records and statements from victims, indicating that Kharat accumulated assets worth crores of rupees. The agency has also conducted raids at multiple locations linked to the godman.
During the investigation, it was found that Kharat used the extorted money to purchase properties and luxury vehicles. The ED has attached several assets belonging to him.
The case highlights the growing menace of self-styled godmen who exploit religious sentiments for personal gain. The ED is continuing its probe to uncover the full extent of the racket.
