In a significant embarrassment for the Maharashtra Police, a woman who was presumed dead in the Jalgaon Jamod unidentified body case has been discovered alive, leading to the suspension of two additional officers. This brings the total number of suspensions to six. A high-level investigation will be conducted into the lapses that occurred during the initial probe.
DGP Flags Irregularities
Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) Sadanand Date, who visited Amravati on Monday for a crime review meeting, highlighted serious irregularities in the handling of the case. The case dates back to April 26, when an unidentified body was discovered near a farm in Rajura village under the Jalgaon Jamod police limits.
Mistaken Identity and Arrests
The body was mistakenly identified as that of missing woman Shivani Kalamekar. Claiming a breakthrough, the police arrested Shivani's father and brother. However, the investigation took a dramatic turn when Shivani was later found alive, forcing the police to release the duo immediately.
Special Team Takes Over
The probe is now being conducted by a special team led by Deulgaon Raja DSP Manisha Kadam. The DGP has directed Amravati Range IG Mahesh Patil to submit a detailed report within two days. The police are now reviewing the entire sequence of events that led to the wrongful identification and subsequent arrests.
