Kerala Police Nab Main Accused in Violent Attack on Panchayat Member's Residence
In a significant development, the Malayinkeezhu police in Thiruvananthapuram district arrested the primary suspect involved in a brutal assault on the house of a local panchayat member, an incident allegedly stemming from a temple festival disagreement. The arrest was made on Wednesday, marking a crucial step in the ongoing investigation.
Arrest of Notorious Accused
The apprehended individual has been identified as M Hemanth, a 32-year-old resident of Kunnumpuram in Anthiyoorkonam. A police team, under the leadership of Malayinkeezhu Station House Officer Rakesh Kumar, successfully captured Hemanth from the Shanthumoola area. Hemanth is a known history-sheeter with a substantial criminal record, having been previously detained under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (Kaapa) in 2022. Authorities revealed that he is implicated in approximately 13 cases, and measures are being taken to invoke Kaapa against him once again due to the severity of this latest offense.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
The attack occurred on Sunday afternoon at the home of Chandralekha, a member of the Anappad ward panchayat, who was alone during the assault. According to police reports, a three-member gang arrived on a motorcycle, allegedly brandishing swords. They proceeded to ransack the residence, causing extensive damage by smashing windowpanes. In a particularly harrowing moment, Hemanth is accused of holding a sword to Chandralekha's neck, issuing death threats, and tearing her clothes, creating a scene of intense fear and violence.
Ongoing Investigation and Political Pressure
This arrest follows the earlier apprehension of another accused, V Pramod, aged 36. Police officials have stated that efforts are actively underway to locate and detain the remaining suspects involved in the case. The incident had previously sparked political unrest, with BJP workers organizing a march to the Malayinkeezhu police station to demand prompt and decisive action, highlighting the community's concern over the attack.
