Malda Student Fatally Attacked Over Fake Social Media Profile Allegations

In a shocking incident from Malda, an 18-year-old student was brutally beaten to death by an acquaintance and his father after confronting them about allegedly vulgar messages sent using his identity on social media. The tragic event has highlighted the dangerous intersection of online harassment and real-world violence.

Background of the Facebook Profile Misuse

The victim, identified as Sk Sohel, a resident of Mirdadpur who had recently completed his Madhyamik examinations, found himself embroiled in controversy when a girl's family admonished him for sending indecent messages via Facebook. The messages originated from a Facebook profile that featured Sohel's photograph as the profile picture, though he vehemently denied any involvement or knowledge of the account.

Growing suspicious, Sohel believed that Sk Amraj, an acquaintance, had created the fake profile using his photo to send the inappropriate texts. This suspicion set the stage for a confrontation that would turn deadly.

The Fatal Confrontation and Assault

On Sunday, Sohel visited Amraj's house to directly confront him about the alleged misuse of his identity. According to police reports, what began as a verbal altercation quickly escalated into a violent physical attack.

Police stated that Amraj and his father, Sk Fijur, attacked Sohel with rods and sticks during the confrontation. The assault was so severe that Sohel lost consciousness at the scene. When Sohel's mother attempted to intervene and protect her son, she too was assaulted by the attackers.

Medical Treatment and Tragic Outcome

The unconscious student was initially taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to Malda Medical College and Hospital for more advanced care.

As his condition continued to deteriorate, medical authorities arranged for his transfer to a specialized hospital in Kolkata. Despite receiving treatment at the Kolkata facility, Sohel succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night, marking a tragic end to what began as a dispute over social media conduct.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Following Sohel's death, police have taken swift action in the case. Superintendent of Police Abhijit Banerjee confirmed that Sk Amraj has been arrested in connection with the fatal assault. Meanwhile, Amraj's parents, including his father who allegedly participated in the attack, have fled and are currently evading authorities.

The case has drawn attention to several critical issues including:

  • The serious consequences of identity theft and profile misuse on social media platforms
  • The escalation of online disputes into physical violence
  • The vulnerability of young people to both cyber harassment and real-world retaliation
  • The need for better mechanisms to address social media-related conflicts before they turn violent

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly disputes over online behavior can escalate into life-threatening situations, particularly when combined with readily available weapons and inadequate conflict resolution mechanisms.
