A heartbreaking incident has shaken the Bhoodan village in Punjab's Malerkotla district, where a young widow, her nine-year-old son, and her elderly mother died after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance. The police confirmed the tragic event on Thursday, revealing a complex case of alleged harassment and financial disputes that preceded the deaths.
The Victims and the Tragic Sequence
The deceased have been identified as 31-year-old Inderpal Kaur, her nine-year-old son Jordan Singh, and her mother Hardeep Kaur. The sequence of their deaths is particularly harrowing. According to police and eyewitness accounts, the two women, Inderpal and Hardeep, succumbed during Wednesday night. Disturbingly, young Jordan Singh, who was sleeping between his mother and grandmother, was found alive but in critical condition the next morning.
He was immediately rushed to the civil hospital in Malerkotla. Given the severity of his condition, doctors referred him to a higher facility in Patiala for advanced treatment. Tragically, the child could not be saved and died on the way to Patiala.
A Video Accusation and Police Investigation
Prior to this extreme step, Inderpal Kaur recorded a video statement. In this chilling recording, she held 10 people responsible for any harm that might come to her family. She specifically named a neighbouring family and their relatives in her allegations. This video has become a crucial piece of evidence for the investigating officers.
Acting on this, the Sandour police station house officer (SHO), Inspector Gagandeep Singh, stated that a case has been registered. The case has been filed under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for abetment to suicide. The investigation is now actively pursuing the individuals named in the video.
Uncovering Financial Entanglements and a Will
The police probe has uncovered further layers to this tragedy. Investigations revealed that Inderpal Kaur had maintained a multi-page account book detailing financial transactions worth lakhs of rupees with several prominent individuals in the area. This notebook is now being scrutinized to understand the nature of these dealings and any potential pressure she faced.
Adding to the mystery, a will executed by Inderpal Kaur also came to light. She had prepared this will on October 20, naming her brother and aunt as beneficiaries. The family's background adds to the sorrow; Inderpal's husband, Pawandeep Singh, passed away several years ago, leaving her to care for their young son and her mother.
The Malerkotla police are continuing their investigation, combining the evidence from the video statement, the account book, and the will to build a complete picture of the events that led to this devastating family tragedy.
