In a significant development, police in Varanasi have arrested a man accused of raping his 9-year-old niece following an encounter in Azamgarh district late on Sunday night. Azamgarh ASP (rural) Chirag Jain provided details on Monday, stating that the minor girl was playing outside her residence in a village under Tahbarpur police limits when her uncle, identified as Nakhadu alias Sahab, took her to an isolated location and raped her. After committing the crime, he fled the village, leaving the girl with grave injuries. She was immediately rushed to the district hospital for medical treatment.
Police Response and Manhunt
Based on a complaint lodged by the victim's family, police registered an FIR against Nakhadu and launched a manhunt to apprehend the accused. The police team worked tirelessly to track down the suspect, utilizing intelligence and informers to narrow down his location.
The Encounter
Late on Sunday, a team from Tahbarpur police station was conducting vehicle checks near Tikapur crossing when informers alerted them about Nakhadu's movement towards Manjhari Bazar. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, police encircled him near Kariyavar Chauhan Basti. Upon realizing he was surrounded, Nakhadu opened fire at the policemen in a desperate attempt to escape. In retaliatory action, the police shot him in the leg, causing him to be captured. A country-made pistol, cartridges, a mobile phone, and Rs 820 in cash were recovered from his possession. He was then rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

The accused is currently under police custody and will face charges including rape and attempt to murder.
