Andhra Pradesh Police Arrest Man for Abetting Tribal Woman's Suicide
In a tragic case from Andhra Pradesh, the Devarapalle police in Anakapalle district have made an arrest in connection with the suicide of a tribal woman. The accused, identified as Kolli Lokesh, a resident of Devarapalle, has been taken into custody on charges of abetting the suicide of Dusari Lakshmi.
Details of the Victim and Incident
The victim, Dusari Lakshmi, hailed from Koraparthi village under Ananthagiri mandal in the Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district. For the past six years, she had been employed as a lab technician at Venkateswara Medical Lab in Devarapalle. According to police reports, the incident unfolded over a period of time, leading to her untimely death.
Allegations of Stalking and Coercion
Based on a complaint filed by Lakshmi's father, Lokesh allegedly engaged in persistent stalking and pressured her to accept his love proposal. It is reported that he used emotional manipulation, threatening to die by suicide if she refused his advances. He further coerced her into maintaining a relationship by making promises of marriage, which she reportedly relied upon.
Caste Differences and Refusal to Marry
The situation took a devastating turn when Lokesh refused to marry Lakshmi, citing caste differences as the primary reason. He stated that his parents would not agree to the alliance due to these societal barriers. This refusal reportedly plunged Lakshmi into a deep depression, as she had been led to believe in a future together.
Tragic Outcome and Police Action
Following Lokesh's rejection, Lakshmi died by suicide in Devarapalle on the night of March 30. After her death, her father approached the police with a formal complaint. The Devarapalle police conducted an investigation based on this complaint and gathered evidence.
As a result, a case was registered against Lokesh under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to abetment of suicide, along with relevant provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The accused was subsequently arrested, marking a significant step in the legal proceedings.
Broader Implications
This case highlights serious issues such as caste-based discrimination, emotional coercion, and the vulnerability of tribal communities. The application of the SC/ST Act underscores the legal protections aimed at preventing atrocities against marginalized groups. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure justice is served in this heartbreaking incident.
