A man was arrested for allegedly beating his six-year-old daughter to death with a stick at Kheria Tangar village in West Singhbhum district on Saturday evening, police said.
Incident Details
According to reports, Lal Singh Purty, 33, picked up a stick suddenly and started beating his younger daughter, Sonia, while she was asleep. Upon hearing her screams, Purty's wife and elder daughter rushed to Sonia's rescue, along with neighbours.
Purty also attempted to beat his wife and daughter and chased some villagers in a bid to attack them. However, locals caught the accused, overpowered him, tied him to a tree, and alerted the police.
Victim's Condition
In the meantime, the girl's mother and neighbours rushed Sonia to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries upon reaching the facility.
Accused's Mental State
“The accused was behaving in an erratic manner for the past few days as his mental condition is reportedly unsound,” said Chaibasa sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Bahaman Tuti.
Investigation Underway
The body has been sent for autopsy. Further probe is underway, police said.
