Palamu Police Arrest Man for Double Murder Over Rs 1,300 Drug Dispute
In a shocking development from Daltonganj, the Palamu district police have arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly murdering two individuals earlier this year. The accused, identified as Chunmun Chowdhury, also known as Ajit, has been sent to judicial custody following his apprehension. Authorities confirmed that his accomplices remain at large as the investigation continues.
Details of the Gruesome Murders
The police revealed that the murders were committed over a mere sum of Rs 1,300, highlighting the brutal nature of the crimes. The first incident occurred on January 16, when the partially burnt body of Shankar Ram, a 37-year-old man, was discovered near a water body under the jurisdiction of the Chainpur police station.
On the same day, another victim, identified as Kareewa, was found dead near the Daltonganj railway station. According to Superintendent of Police Reeshma Rameshan, Shankar Ram had Rs 1,300 in his possession, which his drug partner—reportedly involved in marijuana use—demanded. When Shankar refused, he was struck on the head and subsequently set ablaze.
Witness Turned Victim in the Case
Kareewa, who witnessed the murder of Shankar Ram, initially received Rs 300 to keep silent about the crime. However, he later became defiant, leading to his own tragic demise. Enraged by Kareewa's refusal to comply, Chunmun Chowdhury allegedly stoned him to death, according to police statements.
The police have emphasized that both the deceased and the accused were part of a group of drug addicts, suggesting that substance abuse played a significant role in the violent escalation of events. This case underscores the severe consequences of drug-related disputes in the region.
Ongoing Investigation and Judicial Proceedings
With Chunmun Chowdhury now in judicial custody, the Palamu police are intensifying their efforts to locate and apprehend the remaining accomplices. The investigation aims to uncover further details about the drug network and any additional motives behind the murders.
This incident has drawn attention to the broader issues of crime and drug abuse in Daltonganj and surrounding areas, prompting calls for increased vigilance and community awareness. The police continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
