Graduate Arrested for Posing as Doctor at AIIMS Raipur with Fake Credentials

In a bizarre incident highlighting security vulnerabilities, a 38-year-old graduate was apprehended after trying to impersonate a medical specialist at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raipur. The man, identified as Durjan Singh Goyal, entered the hospital campus equipped with a forged identity card and a medical apron, but his ruse was quickly uncovered by vigilant staff members.

Alert Staff Foil Impersonation Attempt

The incident occurred on Wednesday when Goyal, posing as a doctor, was challenged by hospital personnel who grew suspicious of his credentials. Upon failing to produce valid identification, he was immediately detained and handed over to the Amanaka police. During interrogation, Goyal confessed that his longstanding aspiration to become a doctor drove him to commit the fraudulent act, according to police statements.

In a related development, a woman found wearing a medical apron on the campus was also briefly detained. However, she was later released due to insufficient evidence, with authorities granting her the benefit of doubt. Hospital officials emphasized that the swift actions of security guard Suryakant Mishra and deputy nursing superintendent Jekka Pradeep Kumar were instrumental in preventing any potential misuse or deception of patients.

Security Tightened at Premier Healthcare Institution

Following the incident, AIIMS Raipur authorities have implemented enhanced security measures and issued a public advisory urging visitors to verify the identities of staff members. As a premier tertiary healthcare and academic institution, AIIMS Raipur experiences heavy daily footfall, making it susceptible to such impersonation attempts. Officials noted that some individuals exploit the bustling environment to pose as doctors or staff with fraudulent intentions.

Lt Gen Ashok Jindal, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Raipur, called for public vigilance and stressed the importance of confirming credentials before engaging with anyone claiming to represent the institute. He warned that stringent legal action would be pursued against those involved in fraudulent activities on campus.

Ongoing Police Investigation

The Amanaka police have registered a formal case against Durjan Singh Goyal and are conducting a thorough investigation to determine if he targeted patients prior to his arrest. This probe aims to uncover any previous instances of deception and assess the full scope of his actions. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by major healthcare facilities in maintaining security and trust.
