A shocking incident of domestic violence has come to light in Jamui district, where a man allegedly killed his wife by slitting her throat with a sharp-edged weapon over suspicion of an illicit affair. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday in Kahardih village's mahadalit tola under Khaira police station area.
Details of the Incident
The accused, identified as Gagan Manjhi, did not attempt to flee after committing the crime. Instead, he sat beside the body of his 45-year-old wife, Ugni Devi. Police arrived at the scene and took the accused into custody. The body was sent to a government hospital for postmortem examination.
Background of the Couple
Gagan Manjhi worked as a laborer at a brick kiln. He married Ugni Devi, a native of Kurushud village, approximately 25 years ago. The couple had no children, and other family members had already passed away. According to police, Gagan had long harbored suspicions about his wife's character, and the couple frequently engaged in arguments over this issue.
Sequence of Events
On Wednesday morning, another argument broke out between the couple. In a fit of rage, Gagan allegedly picked up a sickle and slit Ugni's throat, causing her death on the spot. The Khaira Station House Officer (SHO), Mintu Kumar Singh, reached the spot with police force after receiving information. A forensic team was also called to examine every aspect of the crime scene.
Police Investigation
Police are questioning neighbors to ascertain the full facts of the case. Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Satish Suman stated that the preliminary investigation points to murder over suspicion of an illicit relationship. He said, "The accused husband has been arrested and evidence is being collected against him. A chargesheet will be filed soon and strict legal action will be taken."
