A man was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder of Trinamool Congress worker and polling agent Biswajit Pattnayak in Beleghata, a day after the election results were declared. The accused, identified as Raja Das, had been seen joining the Bharatiya Janata Party's celebrations but was not a party worker, according to police sources.
Arrest and Investigation
The police apprehended Raja Das based on evidence gathered from CCTV footage, which clearly showed him and several others chasing the victim moments before the fatal attack. The footage played a crucial role in identifying the suspects involved in the incident that took place in the Beleghata area of Kolkata.
Background of the Incident
Biswajit Pattnayak, a dedicated Trinamool Congress worker, was serving as a polling agent during the recently concluded elections. The murder occurred shortly after the poll results were announced, sparking tension in the locality. While the motive behind the killing is still under investigation, preliminary reports suggest it may be linked to post-election rivalry.
Raja Das, the prime accused, was reportedly present at a celebration event organized by the BJP following their electoral victory. However, police have clarified that Das is not a registered member of the BJP and his presence at the event was not officially sanctioned by the party. The investigation is ongoing to determine if others were involved in the crime.
The arrest has brought some relief to the local community, but concerns about political violence remain. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against all those responsible for the murder. Further details are awaited as the police continue to interrogate the accused and examine additional evidence.
