Delhi Police Arrest Man for Sexual Assault of Elderly Woman After Water Request

In a disturbing incident in central Delhi, a 70-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted at her residence in Ranjit Nagar by a man who had previously visited her home under the pretext of requesting water. The Delhi Police have confirmed the arrest of the 27-year-old accused, identified as Mukesh, a resident of Baljeet Nagar.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Crime

According to police reports released on Wednesday, the accused first approached the woman's house on April 9, asking for water. During this initial encounter, he observed that the elderly woman was alone in her home. Two days later, on April 11, he returned to the residence with criminal intent.

The perpetrator allegedly forced his way into the house, physically assaulted the woman, and then sexually assaulted her. The initial police response came through a PCR call that reported only the physical assault. A police team promptly arrived at the scene and transported the woman to a hospital for medical attention.

Medical Examinations and Case Registration

At the hospital, the woman underwent a medico-legal examination (MLC) which confirmed the physical assault. Based on these findings, authorities registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.

The sexual assault dimension of the crime emerged the following day when the survivor's daughter provided additional information to the police. "The woman was subsequently taken for a second medical examination, which confirmed sexual assault, following which additional sections were added," stated DCP (central) Rohit Rajbir Singh.

Investigation and Arrest Details

Police investigators immediately began examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas of Ranjit Nagar. The footage revealed a suspicious individual entering and exiting the survivor's residence around the time of the incident.

Through a combination of:

  • Multiple CCTV inputs
  • Technical surveillance methods
  • Local intelligence gathering

Investigators successfully tracked the suspect's movements. The accused was identified as Mukesh and was subsequently arrested on April 13 from east Delhi's Pandav Nagar area.

Confession and Legal Proceedings

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to visiting the woman's house initially and then returning after confirming she was alone. He admitted to forcibly entering the residence, assaulting the elderly woman, and sexually assaulting her. Following his arrest, Mukesh has been remanded to judicial custody as the legal proceedings continue.

This case highlights the vulnerability of elderly individuals living alone and underscores the importance of community vigilance. The Delhi Police's use of technological resources like CCTV surveillance combined with traditional investigation methods proved crucial in apprehending the suspect within days of the crime.
