Jharsuguda Police Swiftly Arrest Man Accused of Shooting Pregnant Woman
In a swift and decisive operation, Jharsuguda police have arrested a 40-year-old man within just 24 hours of an alleged shooting incident targeting a pregnant woman in the Sarbahal area. The arrest, made on March 21, follows a violent attack that occurred on the evening of March 20, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Details of the Violent Incident
According to police reports, the accused, identified as Lokesh Kumar Padhan, a resident of Kilasama village under Sasan police limits in Sambalpur district, allegedly barged into the victim's house at Talipada. The woman, who is approximately four months pregnant, was resting at the time when Padhan fired at her, resulting in a bullet injury.
Hearing the gunshot, her husband rushed to the room, only to be assaulted by the accused. In a calculated move to delay immediate assistance, Padhan reportedly locked the door from outside before fleeing the scene. The injured woman was initially shifted to the Jharsuguda district headquarters hospital for emergency care and later referred to VIMSAR, Burla. She is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital, with her condition being closely monitored.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Acting promptly, police registered a case immediately after the incident and formed multiple specialized teams under the supervision of SDPO Uma Shankar Singh, as directed by Jharsuguda SP G R Raghavendra. A coordinated effort involving officers from Jharsuguda Town and Badmal police stations, along with other personnel, was launched.
Utilizing a combination of technical surveillance, local intelligence, and cyber inputs, the teams conducted raids that led to the successful apprehension of the accused. "We formed multiple teams and were successful in nabbing the accused," stated SDPO Uma Shankar Singh.
During the operation, police seized crucial evidence, including:
- A country-made pistol with a magazine
- Nine rounds of live ammunition
- A motorcycle used in the commission of the crime
- A mobile phone belonging to the accused
- Burnt clothes of the accused
- An empty cartridge recovered from the crime scene
Motive Behind the Attack
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the attack was driven by deep-seated personal enmity. SDPO Singh explained, "The accused suspected the involvement of the victim's minor son in the death of his own son in an earlier case, which led him to carry out the attack." This tragic motive underscores the personal vendetta that precipitated the violent assault on the pregnant woman.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to gather evidence and build a comprehensive case against the accused. The swift arrest has been hailed as a testament to the efficiency and dedication of the Jharsuguda police force in addressing serious crimes and ensuring justice for victims.
