A 23-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly stabbing his estranged girlfriend to death in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, police said. The victim was 18 years old. The incident occurred on Friday, and the accused, identified as Mallik, fled the scene immediately after the crime. However, he was apprehended within 12 hours.
Locals discovered the victim's body in a paddy field and informed the police. “We produced the accused before the court and were granted a three-day police remand. He was arrested under Section 103(1) of the BNS Act,” said Tanmoy Nath, the officer-in-charge of the police station.
According to Nath, the duo had a troubled past. During interrogation, the accused confessed that he was in a relationship with the girl last year, during which he impregnated her. After her parents learned of the pregnancy, they filed a case against him at Khetri Police Station. “Back then, he was arrested on rape charges under the Pocso Act, convicted by a court, and sent to jail. He was released around two months ago on bail. After his release, he reportedly tried to meet the girl in an attempt to reestablish their relationship. However, when he found out that the girl was in a relationship with someone else, he stabbed her multiple times, leading to her death,” the officer added.
While being taken to court, the accused spoke to local media and confessed to killing her.
