Guwahati: A 23-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly stabbing his estranged girlfriend to death in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district. According to the police, the victim was 18 years old. The incident occurred on Friday, and the accused, identified as Mallik, fled the scene immediately after. However, he was arrested within 12 hours of the incident.
The locals discovered her body in a paddy field and informed the police. “We produced the accused before the court and were granted a three-day police remand. He was arrested under Section 103(1) of the BNS Act,” said Tanmoy Nath, the police station’s officer-in-charge.
Background of the Relationship
According to Nath, the duo had a troubled past. During interrogation, the accused confessed that he was in a relationship with the girl last year, during which he impregnated her. After her parents discovered the pregnancy, they filed a case against him at Khetri Police Station. “Back then, he was arrested on rape charges under the Pocso Act, convicted by a court, and sent to jail. He was released around two months ago on bail,” the officer added.
Events Leading to the Murder
After his release, the accused reportedly attempted to meet the girl in an effort to reestablish their relationship. However, when he learned that she was in a relationship with someone else, he stabbed her multiple times, leading to her death. While being taken to court, the accused spoke to local media and confessed to killing her.
The police continue to investigate the case, and further details are expected to emerge during the remand period.
