Man Arrested in Jamshedpur for Alleged Witchcraft-Related Murder

Police in East Singhbhum district have made a significant arrest in a disturbing case involving the murder of an elderly woman, allegedly motivated by suspicions of witchcraft. The incident, which occurred on March 4, has shocked the local community and highlights ongoing superstitions in certain rural areas.

Details of the Arrest and Accused

On Monday, authorities arrested a 25-year-old man identified as Raju Puran for the brutal killing of Subhashini Nayak, an elderly resident. Puran, who hails from Kakikapur village but works in a factory in Gujarat, was taken into custody after a thorough investigation by the Potka police station.

During interrogation, Puran provided a chilling account of his motives. He claimed that his mother had been suffering from poor health for several months, leading him to believe that someone was practicing witchcraft against her. His younger brother, who cares for their mother in Kakipur, had informed him of her declining condition over the phone, further fueling his suspicions.

Disturbing Dreams and Fatal Encounter

Puran also reported experiencing recurring nightmares involving the deceased woman, Subhashini Nayak. According to Officer-in-Charge Sunny Toppo of the Potka police station, Puran narrated that he often saw Nayak in his dreams, where she allegedly threatened to eliminate his family. These vivid dreams reportedly intensified his fears and contributed to his violent actions.

The fatal incident took place on March 4, when Puran returned home to be with his family during the Holi festival. Subhashini Nayak was walking to a nearby market, known locally as a 'haat', to sell twigs. Puran spotted her on an isolated stretch of road, where he pushed her to the ground and slit her throat, killing her instantly. Her body was later discovered in a paddy field in Kakipur, sending shockwaves through the village.

Police Investigation and Recovery of Evidence

Initially, police detained Puran for questioning as part of their routine investigation into the murder. The breakthrough came when authorities recovered the murder weapon—a knife—from the accused, leading to his formal arrest. The recovery of this crucial piece of evidence solidified the case against him, enabling law enforcement to proceed with charges.

This case underscores the tragic consequences of deep-seated superstitions and highlights the challenges faced by police in addressing such crimes. The East Singhbhum police have emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and her family, while also raising awareness about the dangers of witchcraft-related violence in rural communities.
