Thane Police Register Case for Alleged Molestation of Mentally Challenged Minor
Police in Thane district have officially registered a case against a man accused of molesting a 13-year-old mentally challenged girl in the Bhiwandi area. Authorities confirmed the development on Tuesday, highlighting the serious nature of the allegations involving a vulnerable minor.
Delayed Complaint and Incident Details
The alleged incident took place on 12 December last year, but the victim's mother only approached the Kongaon police station with a formal complaint on 8 March. Officials noted that she did not provide any specific reason for the delay in reporting the crime, leaving questions about the circumstances surrounding the timing of the complaint.
According to a police official from Kongaon, the girl and her sister had visited a relative's house when the accused, who was reportedly aware of her intellectual disability, allegedly touched her inappropriately. Following the complaint, police acted swiftly, registering a case on Monday against the accused under Sections 74 and 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Section 74 pertains to assault on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, while Section 78 addresses stalking. Additionally, provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have been invoked, given the victim's age and the severity of the offense.
