A tragic accident occurred in Shahabad town of Uttar Pradesh's Rampur district on Thursday morning, claiming the lives of a businessman and his wife. Sunil Rastogi (50) and his wife Neha Rastogi (47) were killed when the licensed rifle Sunil was cleaning discharged unexpectedly.
Details of the Incident
The incident took place around 7:30 am on the rooftop of their two-storey house. Sunil was cleaning his licensed rifle when it accidentally went off. The bullet pierced through his neck and then struck his wife, who was standing directly behind him, also hitting her neck. Both died on the spot.
Family's Response
Hearing the gunshot, the couple's son and daughter rushed to the rooftop and found their parents lying dead. They immediately alerted neighbors and local authorities.
Police Investigation
Police and a forensic team arrived at the scene and launched an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the rifle had a round in the chamber even after the magazine was removed. Civil Lines circle officer Devki Nandan stated that only one round was fired and the initial inquiry points to an accident. “We are examining every angle,” Nandan said.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accidental discharge.
