Man Dies After Falling into Open Drain at Bareilly Bus Terminal

Tragic Accident at Bareilly Bus Terminal Claims Life

A devastating incident unfolded at the bustling Satellite bus terminal in Bareilly's Baradari area, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old man who fell into an open drain. The victim, identified as Mohd Tauheed from Shahabad in Hardoi district, arrived at the terminal on Tuesday evening to board a bus when the tragedy occurred.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy

According to officials, the incident took place around 9:30 PM on Tuesday when Tauheed purportedly slipped into the uncovered drain. Bareilly municipal commissioner Sanjeev Kumar Maurya provided details based on CCTV footage, stating, "There was an open space left for cleaning the drain. As per CCTV footage, he was seated on the boundary wall next to the drain and might have abruptly fallen into it."

Bystanders immediately raised an alarm and attempted to rescue the young man, but their efforts were thwarted by the strong water current that swept him away. Police and municipal officials launched a search operation around midnight, but faced significant challenges due to the drain's depth of approximately 15 feet, heavy garbage accumulation, and fast-flowing water.

Massive Rescue Operation Involving Multiple Agencies

On Wednesday, the search intensified as teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) joined the operation. Authorities deployed heavy machinery including suction pumps, a crane, and a piling machine to aid in the rescue efforts.

The operation involved approximately 80 rescue workers who worked tirelessly at the spot. Slabs on the remaining part of the drain were removed, and debris along the stretch was cleared to facilitate the search. After nearly 30 hours of extensive efforts, Tauheed's body was finally spotted around 3 AM on Thursday, a few meters away under the sludge accumulated inside the drain.

Identification and Local Concerns About Safety

The victim was brought out and identified with the help of an Aadhaar card found in his pocket. This tragic incident has highlighted serious safety concerns at the crowded bus terminal.

Local residents revealed that the uncovered drain had remained open since a slab was damaged during a cleaning campaign last May. Transport department officials claimed they had repeatedly flagged the matter to the municipal body, but no corrective action was taken, raising questions about municipal negligence and public safety protocols.

Broader Implications and Safety Measures Needed

This incident underscores the critical need for proper maintenance of public infrastructure, especially in high-traffic areas like bus terminals. The delayed response and challenging rescue conditions demonstrate how inadequate safety measures can turn minor hazards into life-threatening situations.

The tragedy has sparked conversations about municipal accountability and the urgent need for regular inspections and timely repairs of public infrastructure. As investigations continue, authorities face mounting pressure to implement stricter safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
