Tragic Fire Mishap Claims Life During Maha Shivratri Celebrations in Gujarat

A devastating incident unfolded during a Maha Shivratri procession in Garbada, Dahod district, Gujarat, late Sunday night, resulting in the death of a 55-year-old man due to severe burn injuries. The victim has been identified as Raman Rathod, a local resident who was attending the religious event.

Details of the Fatal Accident

According to police reports, the tragedy occurred during a cultural performance by a troupe that included flame throwers as part of the Maha Shivratri festivities. As part of their act, a performer attempted to create a burning circle on the ground using an inflammable liquid. A Shivling was placed at the center of this circle, and the performers staged the act around it, attracting a large crowd of onlookers.

While lighting the circle, the flames unexpectedly travelled back through the inflammable liquid in the container. In a panic, the performer reportedly ran from the spot and threw the burning bottle away to avoid further danger.

Victim's Fatal Injuries and Aftermath

Raman Rathod, who had come to watch the procession, was standing near the area where the bottle was thrown. He suffered serious burn injuries as a result of the mishap. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but, despite medical efforts, succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

Police have registered a case of accidental death and have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the exact circumstances and any potential negligence involved. Authorities are examining the safety protocols followed during the performance to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Community and Legal Response

The local community in Garbada has been left in shock by the sudden loss, with many expressing grief over the incident during what was meant to be a joyous religious celebration. Maha Shivratri, a significant Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, typically involves various cultural and devotional activities, but this event has cast a somber shadow over the proceedings.

This accident highlights the critical need for stringent safety measures during public performances, especially those involving hazardous elements like fire. Police are urging event organizers and performers to adhere to strict guidelines to ensure public safety at such gatherings.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to provide support to Rathod's family and are reviewing local regulations for fire-based performances to enhance safety standards in the region.
