Muzaffarpur Village Erupts in Violence During Police Operation, One Dead
A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday in Asia village, located under the Gaighat police station area of Muzaffarpur district, resulting in the death of a 60-year-old man during a violent clash between villagers and police personnel. The deceased has been identified as Jagatveer Rai, who succumbed to a bullet injury that pierced his chest, leading to his immediate death at the scene.
Conflicting Accounts Emerge Over Cause of Death
Local residents have strongly alleged that Rai was killed as a result of police firing during the confrontation. However, the district administration has stated that the exact cause of the firing that led to his death has not yet been firmly established, leaving the circumstances shrouded in uncertainty and investigation.
Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kantesh Kumar Mishra provided details on the police operation that sparked the violence. According to Mishra, a police team had been dispatched to Asia village with the objective of arresting an individual accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. This case is linked to a disturbing 2023 incident in the same village, where a minor girl was allegedly forced to remove her clothes on suspicion of theft, prompting police to register a First Information Report (FIR) in the matter.
Violence Erupts as Police Attempt Arrest
SSP Mishra explained that upon the police team's arrival in the village, the accused sought refuge in another person's house, and villagers quickly mobilized, beginning to pelt stones at the officers. The situation rapidly escalated into a full-blown confrontation, with firing reported from both sides during the intense exchange.
"Three of our policemen sustained injuries in the incident and are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital," Mishra stated. "While villagers are alleging that the man died in police firing, this claim is yet to be ascertained as shots were fired from both sides during the clash."
The incident has raised serious questions about law enforcement procedures and community tensions in the region. Authorities are now tasked with conducting a thorough investigation to determine the precise sequence of events and establish accountability for Rai's death, amidst growing calls for justice from local residents.
