Kerala Police Arrest Man with 12.5kg Ganja in Election Crackdown, Seized Drugs Meant for Students
In a significant operation linked to election enforcement, a 46-year-old man was apprehended with a substantial quantity of ganja in Paravur, Kerala, on Friday. The arrest underscores heightened vigilance by law enforcement during the electoral period.
Details of the Arrest and Seizure
The accused, identified as Vinod from North Paravur, was taken into custody by the Vadakkekara police in collaboration with the rural district Dansaf team. During an inspection conducted as part of election-related security measures, authorities discovered 12.5 kilograms of ganja in his possession.
According to police officials, the narcotic substance was allegedly intended for distribution among school and college students, raising serious concerns about drug abuse among youth in the region. The ganja was found concealed in specially packed packets inside shoulder bags, indicating a planned attempt to evade detection.
Trail of the Narcotics and Accused's Background
Investigations reveal that the accused procured the ganja from Odisha. He traveled by train to Palakkad and then reached Paravur by bus, highlighting a cross-state drug trafficking network. Police have noted that Vinod has a prior criminal record, including a narcotics case registered by Kothamangalam excise for possession of over 2 kilograms of ganja, as well as an assault case at the North Paravur police station.
Police Operation and Legal Proceedings
The operation was executed under the direction of Munambam DSP S Jayakrishnan, led by Vadakkekara inspector K R Biju, along with other police personnel and Dansaf team members. Following the arrest, the accused was produced before a court and remanded. Police have stated that he will be taken into custody for further investigation to uncover potential links and accomplices in the drug trade.
Continued Enforcement Efforts
Ernakulam rural police have emphasized that similar raids will continue as part of the ongoing election-related enforcement drive. This initiative aims to curb illegal activities and ensure a safe environment during the electoral process, with a focus on preventing drug distribution that targets vulnerable student populations.
The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges in combating drug trafficking and the critical role of law enforcement in safeguarding communities, especially during sensitive periods like elections.
