The fire erupted at a house owned by K Periyasamy, aged 42, who resided on Mettu Street. According to statements from the Denkanikottai police, the tragedy unfolded after Periyasamy had a friend over on Tuesday evening. The two men consumed alcohol together and subsequently fell asleep inside the asbestos-roofed structure.
Around 1:30 AM on Wednesday, flames suddenly engulfed the property. The fire spread with alarming speed, consuming the entire house before the occupants could react. Alert neighbours quickly notified the local police and the fire and rescue services, who rushed to the scene immediately.
Rescue Operation and Aftermath
Firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour before finally managing to extinguish it. The rescue operation revealed a grim outcome. While Periyasamy was pulled out with critical burn injuries, his friend could not be saved. The unidentified friend was charred to death in the inferno.
