Tragedy Strikes Hours Before Wedding in Bhavnagar
In a shocking incident that has rattled the community, a 26-year-old man from Bhavnagar, Gujarat, was arrested for allegedly murdering his bride-to-be just hours before their scheduled wedding. The accused, identified as Sajan Khagna Baraiya, was apprehended by the police on Sunday night after a frantic search.
A Fateful Argument Over Bridal Attire and Money
The tragic event unfolded on Saturday morning at the parental home of the victim, Soni Himmat Rathod (22). According to police officials, the couple, who had been in a relationship for one and a half years against their families' initial wishes, were set to formalize their union. The families had eventually consented to the marriage.
However, on the day of the wedding, Sajan visited Soni's home, where a heated argument erupted. DySP RR Singhal of Bhavnagar City Division revealed that the dispute was centered around the panetar (a traditional bridal dress) and money (paisa).
The altercation quickly turned violent. Police stated that Sajan, in a fit of rage, allegedly picked up an iron pipe and brutally assaulted Soni, hitting her multiple times. He is also accused of grabbing her head and smashing it against a wall. The grievous injuries led to her immediate death.
A Criminal Past and Swift Police Action
The family members, who were asleep, woke up to the commotion and discovered Soni's lifeless body. They immediately alerted the police control room. A team from the Gangajaliya police station rushed to the scene, and the body was sent for a post-mortem examination.
An FIR was registered, and a manhunt was launched for Sajan, who had fled. PI V K Makwana, the in-charge of the Gangajaliya police station, confirmed that their efforts culminated in the arrest of the accused on Sunday night, November 16, 2025.
Investigations uncovered a disturbing criminal history. A statement from the Bhavnagar Police confirmed that Sajan Baraiya is a history-sheeter with at least six previous cases registered against him. These include serious charges such as:
- Murder
- Attempt to murder
- Causing grievous hurt
