Man Kills to Fake Own Death, Escapes Rape Case in Dehradun
In a chilling incident from Meerut, a man allegedly murdered another individual to stage his own death, aiming to escape punishment in a rape case registered against him in Dehradun in 2024. The Saharanpur police have arrested the main accused, Arjun Singh, 25, along with his brother Vijay Sagar, 27, and two associates, Robin Kumar, 25, and Mohd Sarik, 24, following a thorough investigation.
Gruesome Plot to Evade Justice
According to SSP Abhinandan Singh, Arjun Singh was working as a driver at a parlour in Dehradun in 2024 when a female employee filed a rape case against him. He spent approximately six months in prison, where he met co-accused Mohd Sarik. As the case proceeded to trial, Arjun's lawyer warned him of a potential life imprisonment sentence, terrifying him at the prospect of returning to jail.
This fear drove Arjun to devise a macabre plan to fake his own death. He enlisted the help of his brother Vijay and associates Robin and Sarik to carry out the scheme. The group targeted Rohit, a man from Mohammadpur Kandhela, whom Arjun had lent around Rs 1.70 lakh during the lockdown. When Rohit failed to repay the debt, Arjun held a grudge against him, seeing an opportunity to use his death in the plot.
Execution of the Murder and Cover-Up
On February 24, the accused executed their plan by strangling Rohit with his own muffler. They then placed the body in Arjun's car, loosened a wheel bolt to simulate a car crash, and set the vehicle on fire using petrol. During this process, Arjun suffered minor burns. After the incident, he fled to Dehradun, where he trimmed his hair to alter his appearance and obtained a SIM card under a different name to avoid detection.
To complete the illusion of his death, Arjun instructed his brother Vijay to file a missing person complaint, making it appear that he had perished in the fire. However, the police grew suspicious when they discovered the vehicle was registered under Arjun's name. Upon questioning Vijay, he confessed, leading to the arrest of all involved parties.
Police Investigation and Arrests
SSP Abhinandan Singh detailed that once Arjun was found alive, he admitted to the rape case and the murder plot. The police have charged all four accused with murder, conspiracy, and attempting to obstruct justice. This case highlights the extreme lengths some individuals will go to evade legal consequences, underscoring the importance of diligent police work in uncovering such elaborate crimes.
The investigation revealed that Arjun's motive was solely to avoid life imprisonment, using Rohit's death as a means to fake his own demise. The police are now working to gather further evidence and ensure a strong case in court, emphasizing that such acts of violence and deception will not go unpunished.
