A tragic incident unfolded in Vaishali district on Thursday evening when a 24-year-old man allegedly shot a woman before turning the gun on himself over a strained love affair. The event occurred at Imadpur village under Bhagwanpur police station area.
Incident Details
The deceased has been identified as Pankaj Sahni, while the injured woman is Ganga Kumari, 19, who is battling for life at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). Both hailed from Himadpur village. According to police, the two had been in a relationship for three to four years, but Ganga's family opposed the relationship and had recently arranged her marriage with another man. This allegedly triggered the incident.
Sequence of Events
The incident took place around 8 pm when Ganga was alone at home. Her father, Upendra Sahni, was away at work. Police stated that Pankaj entered the house, and an argument ensued. During the altercation, he allegedly shot Ganga in the chest and then shot himself shortly after. Pankaj died on the spot.
Hearing gunshots, villagers rushed to the spot and informed both families. Ganga was immediately taken to Hajipur Sadar Hospital, from where she was referred to PMCH due to her serious injuries. Police confirmed her condition is critical.
Investigation
A police team, along with forensic science laboratory (FSL) officials, reached the scene and collected evidence. Vaishali Superintendent of Police Vikram Sihag said, “Preliminary investigation suggests that the incident is linked to the woman’s approaching marriage arranged by her family.”
The SP also revealed that Pankaj had a criminal background, with a loot case registered against him. He had recently been released on bail. Further investigation is underway.
