Man shot dead while sleeping in Samastipur village

Patna: A 32-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by unidentified miscreants while he was asleep inside his house at Morwa Deeh village under Musrigharari police station area in Samastipur district early Monday.

The deceased, identified as Sujit Kumar Jha alias Monu, son of Pramod Jha, sustained four bullet injuries to the head and one to the chest.

According to police, two spent cartridges and live rounds were recovered from the spot. Family members alleged that a co-villager, Prince Kumar, fired at Monu through a window before fleeing. Hearing the gunshots, the family rushed to the room and took him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The victim’s father alleged that the accused was involved in drug abuse and other illegal activities and had attacked his son around 10 days ago. He claimed that despite being arrested, the accused was later released. “Had he been sent to jail then, my son would still be alive,” he said.

Police said the houses of the accused and the victim are barely 50 metres apart. Following the incident, the accused and his family members are absconding. Sadar (Samastipur) ASP Sanjay Kumar Pandey, who visited the spot, said preliminary findings suggest a long-standing rivalry between the two. He added that the victim had a criminal record and had recently returned to the village after working outside, where he was constructing a new house.

“The body has been sent for post-mortem. Raids are underway to arrest the accused. Further investigation is on,” the ASP said.
