A festive Vishu morning tradition descended into terror for a group of children in the Panangad area of Tripunithura, Kerala, when a resident allegedly threatened them with an air gun. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, has shocked the local community and led to police intervention.
Traditional Celebration Interrupted by Aggressive Response
The children were participating in the customary Vishu practice of displaying Vishu Kani and seeking Vishu Kaineettam (monetary gifts) by visiting homes in their neighborhood. According to police reports, the minors knocked on the door of Jelson, a 34-year-old resident, around 1 AM. The homeowner, reportedly angered by being awakened, opened the door and pointed an air gun directly at the children.
The frightened children immediately dropped the Vishu Kani items they were carrying and fled the scene in panic. Police investigations revealed that Jelson's aggressive reaction stemmed from his frustration that the noise had disturbed his sleeping child.
Police Action and Legal Consequences
Panangad police swiftly responded to the complaint and registered a formal case against Jelson. Authorities seized the air gun as evidence and subsequently arrested the accused. He was charged with criminal intimidation and for committing rash or negligent acts that endangered human life.
Following standard procedures, Jelson was released on station bail after processing. The case highlights concerns about appropriate responses to traditional cultural practices and the serious legal implications of threatening behavior, especially toward minors.
Separate Incident: Young Man Found Dead in Eloor
In an unrelated but tragic development, a 23-year-old man identified as Sanoj K from Kozhikode died on Thursday while receiving medical treatment. Sanoj was discovered hanging from a ceiling at a homestay in Eloor on Wednesday.
Police reported that the knot came undone during the incident, causing him to fall. His friend immediately rushed him to Kalamassery Medical College Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the circumstances and reasons behind this extreme step.
