Mandya Village Sees Shocking Arson Over Marriage Dispute
In a deeply troubling incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a man in Chunchagahalli village, Mandya district, allegedly set his son-in-law's house on fire. This violent act was reportedly motivated by his opposition to his daughter's marriage, despite both families belonging to the same caste and residing on the same lane.
Background of the Conflict
According to officials from the Maddur police station, who have registered a First Information Report (FIR) in the case, the accused, identified as Chennegowda, aged 45, was upset over his daughter's union with a youth from their locality. Police sources revealed that the youth's family had previously approached Chennegowda with a marriage proposal, but he firmly rejected it. However, defying his wishes, the couple proceeded to get married in a simple ceremony just three days prior to the incident.
Details of the Arson Attack
On Saturday, taking advantage of the absence of the newlywed couple and their family members, Chennegowda allegedly carried out the arson attack. He set the house ablaze, causing significant damage to the property. Alerted by vigilant locals, fire and emergency personnel rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control after intense efforts.
During the commission of the crime, Chennegowda sustained burn injuries himself. He was subsequently shifted to a hospital in Bengaluru for medical treatment, where his condition is being monitored.
Police Response and Investigation
Mandya Superintendent of Police Shobha Rani VJ, along with other senior officers, visited the incident site to assess the situation and oversee the investigation. The police are actively probing the motives behind this extreme act of violence, which has raised concerns about familial conflicts in the region.
Couple's Relationship and Legal Status
Sources close to the investigation indicated that both the youth and his wife are adults, having reached the age of majority. They have reportedly been in a loving relationship for several years, which adds a layer of tragedy to this incident, as their union was based on mutual affection rather than any illicit or forced arrangement.
This case highlights the severe consequences that can arise from disputes over marriage, even within communities sharing the same social and caste backgrounds. Authorities are urging for peaceful resolutions to such conflicts to prevent further violence.
