Mandya Police Hosts Transformative Civilian Gun Training Program
In a bold initiative aimed at fostering community empowerment, the Mandya district police organized a week-long civilian gun training program. This transformative effort was designed to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the public, enhancing mutual trust and safety awareness.
Intensive Training and Diverse Participation
The program culminated with precision shooting exercises in the Dodda Byadarahalli forest, where 80 participants, including a significant number of women and senior citizens, transitioned from novices to confident firearm handlers. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, trainees learned technical aspects such as firearm maintenance, cleaning, and the essential ethics of responsible ownership.
Deputy Superintendent of Police S Rachaiah highlighted the overwhelming response, with nearly 100 applications received. A rigorous background verification process was implemented to ensure the highest safety standards. For many participants, the certificate earned is a crucial step toward fulfilling one of the 13 mandatory requirements for obtaining a gun licence.
Motivations and Benefits of the Training
The motivations behind joining the training were diverse. Businessman Shiva Kumar MN enrolled as a precautionary measure to safeguard his agricultural lands from wild animals, including leopards, that occasionally appear near his farm. He learned about the program through a friend and saw it as a practical step for protection.
Others viewed the training as an opportunity to develop skills for potential employment in the private security sector. The camp also saw inspiring participation from families and senior citizens. For instance, Ramesh attended with his daughter Gagana R, an IT professional eager to learn firearm safety and responsibility.
Among the women participants was a 55-year-old trainee who joined to facilitate the transfer of her father's gun licence, while a 65-year-old man participated to renew his licence, showcasing the wide range of age groups and backgrounds involved.
Strengthening Community-Police Relations
Beyond the tactical drills, the program played a vital role in strengthening trust and mutual respect between the police and the citizens they serve. By empowering individuals with knowledge and skills, the initiative promotes a safer and more collaborative community environment in Mandya.
