Ullal Police Conduct Major Raid, Seize Illegal E-Cigarettes Worth Rs 37,000 in Mangaluru
In a significant crackdown on illegal tobacco product sales, the Ullal police in Mangaluru have seized e-cigarettes valued at approximately Rs 37,000 during a targeted raid. The operation was launched based on credible intelligence received by law enforcement officials.
Police Action Based on Tip-Off Leads to Seizure
According to a formal complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Siddappa Naranur of the Ullal police station on Tuesday, authorities acted swiftly upon receiving information about an individual involved in the unlawful storage and distribution of e-cigarettes. Acting on this tip-off, a specialized police team mobilized and conducted a raid around 9 PM at a residential property located in the Talapady area.
During the search of the premises, the accused, identified as Nawaz, was discovered to be in possession of a substantial quantity of e-cigarettes. The illicit products were found stored in a white sack, containing various brands of e-cigarettes. The police confiscated all the items, with the total estimated value reaching Rs 37,000.
Violations of Tobacco Control Legislation
The investigation revealed that Nawaz was operating without any valid license or authorization to sell these tobacco products to consumers. This unauthorized activity constitutes a clear breach of established regulatory frameworks.
The seized e-cigarettes fall under violations of multiple key legislations:
- The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 (COTPA Act).
- The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Rules, 2020.
These laws are designed to regulate the tobacco industry strictly, ensuring that all sales and distribution activities comply with health and safety standards to protect public welfare.
Legal Proceedings Initiated Against Accused
Following the seizure, the Ullal police have officially registered a case against Nawaz for his involvement in the illegal storage and sale of e-cigarettes. The authorities are now moving forward with further legal action, which may include charges under the relevant sections of the COTPA Act and associated rules.
This enforcement action underscores the ongoing efforts by Mangaluru police to combat the unauthorized trade of tobacco products, particularly e-cigarettes, which pose significant health risks and are subject to stringent regulatory oversight.
The case highlights the importance of adhering to licensing requirements and regulatory compliance in the tobacco sector, with law enforcement agencies remaining vigilant against such illicit activities to safeguard community health and uphold the law.
